Design Workshops for Product Teams, Compared

Eight options, from per-seat courses to team workshops, judged the same way

Design Workshops for Product Teams, Compared

The best design workshop for a product team depends on what you want the team to leave with. If individual designers need to learn a method, a per-seat course from Nielsen Norman Group or IDEO U is the better buy, and a design sprint makes sense when a team has one idea to test in a week. When a whole team needs to make product decisions the same way, you want a private, in-person workshop.

We run Incomparable, one of the eight options below, so we judged every entry the same way, ours included: who it suits, what it costs, what you leave with, and when it's the wrong pick. The list is ordered by format, from individual courses to team workshops. It isn't a ranking.

Last updated October 22, 2026. Prices come from each provider's public pages on that date. Design sprint prices are agencies' own estimates.

The best design workshops by goal

  • Individual upskilling: Nielsen Norman Group or IDEO U
  • Training your own facilitators: Voltage Control, Design Thinkers Academy, or AJ&Smart
  • Testing one idea in a week: a design sprint agency
  • In-house design thinking in Belgium, France, or Luxembourg: IntoTheMinds
  • A whole team aligning on how it decides: Incomparable

For a team of 16, the published and estimated prices compare like this:

These formats aren't like-for-like. A sprint takes five days and ends with a prototype, and the per-seat courses come with certificates.

1. Nielsen Norman Group

Nielsen Norman Group is the UX research and training firm founded by Jakob Nielsen and Don Norman. It runs live online courses on single topics, such as journey mapping or usability testing, taught by its own researchers.

  • Best for: individual designers and researchers who want a rigorous method and a recognized credential
  • Format: live online, one day (7 hours) or two half days
  • Price: $1,265 per person for a one-day course. Buying 30 or more seats saves up to 39%, and self-paced courses cost $199 to $289. Private team training is priced on request.
  • What you leave with: a well-tested method, taught with NN/g's own examples
  • Not the best fit if: you want your team to work on its own product together. Participants learn alongside people from other companies.

2. IDEO U

IDEO U is the online school of IDEO, the design firm most associated with design thinking. Its main courses run as online cohorts over several weeks.

  • Best for: people new to design thinking, and non-designers who want to learn the method
  • Format: online cohorts over five weeks, plus self-paced options
  • Price: $899 per person for a five-week course, $199 for the self-paced Hello Design Thinking, and $1,598 to $3,395 for certificate programs. Teams of 10 or more get 15% off.
  • What you leave with: a certificate and a working grasp of the design thinking process
  • Not the best fit if: your team already knows the method and needs to apply it to a real product decision

3. Voltage Control

Voltage Control trains facilitators. Its certification is aimed at people who will run workshops and meetings themselves.

  • Best for: a designer, product lead, or ops person who will facilitate workshops in-house on a regular basis
  • Format: online, over three months
  • Price: $5,000 per person
  • What you leave with: a facilitation certification and a person who can run sessions without outside help
  • Not the best fit if: you need one team aligned this quarter. Training a facilitator takes months before the first session.

4. Design Thinkers Academy

Design Thinkers Academy teaches design thinking and facilitation in person. Its one-day creative facilitation course is held in Australia and New Zealand.

  • Best for: people who want to learn facilitation in a room with other practitioners
  • Format: in person, one day
  • Price: AUD 950 per person, or AUD 850 early bird. In-house versions are priced on request.
  • What you leave with: hands-on practice with facilitation techniques
  • Not the best fit if: you're outside Australia and New Zealand, or you need the whole team trained together

5. AJ&Smart

AJ&Smart is the agency behind Design Sprint 2.0, a shorter version of the original Google Ventures sprint. It also teaches workshop facilitation through its Workshopper training.

  • Best for: people who want to run design sprints and structured workshops themselves
  • Format: online training
  • Price: we couldn't find a current price on AJ&Smart's own site, so check with them directly
  • What you leave with: a set of ready-made workshop formats and the skills to run them
  • Not the best fit if: you'd rather have an experienced facilitator run the session for you

6. Design sprint agencies

A design sprint is a five-day process, first developed at Google Ventures, for testing one product idea with a prototype and real users. Many agencies and freelance facilitators run them.

  • Best for: a team with one specific product question that it needs answered within a week
  • Format: usually five days in a row, in person or remote
  • Price: agencies estimate $12,000 to $25,000 for a mid-tier studio, and up to $30,000 at the top end. Freelance facilitators charge less.
  • What you leave with: a tested prototype and a decision about one idea
  • Not the best fit if: the problem is how your team makes decisions in general. A sprint answers one question, and it takes a week of the team's time.

7. IntoTheMinds

IntoTheMinds is a research and consulting firm that runs in-house design thinking sessions in Belgium, France, and Luxembourg.

  • Best for: teams in those three countries that want a design thinking program run at their office
  • Format: in person, two days, for 10 to 20 people
  • Price: from €5,000 excluding VAT
  • What you leave with: a team that has worked through the design thinking process together
  • Not the best fit if: you're based elsewhere, or you want a workshop focused on product design decisions

8. Incomparable

Incomparable is our product design studio, based in Finland. We run three full-day workshops, Design Principles, Designing for Empathy, and Philosophical Foundations, each tailored to the team after a 30-minute intro call. More than 1,000 people in 17 countries have taken part, and 43% of our workshop clients book again.

  • Best for: product and design teams of up to 16 that argue from different starting points and escalate decisions that should be settled in the room
  • Format: in person at your office, one full day (or two half days)
  • Price: $3,499 for up to 8 people or $4,799 for up to 16, plus a flat travel fee of $699 to $2,199 depending on region. The pricing guide has the full breakdown.
  • What you leave with: something the team uses the following week, such as a written set of design principles, plus the templates from the day
  • Not the best fit if: you want certificates for individual designers, a tested prototype, or a remote format. Our published prices are for in-person delivery only.

How to choose a design workshop

Before you book anything, answer three questions:

  1. Is this for individuals or for a team? Individuals point to per-seat courses. A team that needs to work together points to a private workshop.
  2. What should exist the week after? A certificate, a prototype, and a shared way of making decisions each point to a different format.
  3. Who will be in the room? If decision-makers won't attend, no format will stick.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a design workshop cost for a team?

For a team of 16, expect about $5,500 to $7,000 for a one-day private workshop like ours, $12,000 to $30,000 for an agency-run design sprint, and $12,000 to $20,000 in seats for per-seat courses. Our pricing guide goes through what drives each cost.

What's the difference between a design sprint and a design workshop?

A design sprint is a fixed five-day process for testing one idea with a prototype. A design workshop is usually one day, and it teaches a team a way of working that applies to many decisions afterwards.

Are online design workshops as good as in-person ones?

For individual learning, online courses work well. NN/g's live courses and IDEO U's cohorts both run online. For a team working on its own decisions, we recommend in person, because the hands-on exercises and group discussion work best when everyone is in the same room.

Should we train an internal facilitator instead of hiring one?

If you'll run workshops every month, yes. For a single workshop, an outside facilitator is faster, and it's easier for an outsider to challenge leadership in the room.

If a team workshop sounds like the right fit, book a 30-minute intro call. We'll tell you which of our workshops fits, what it costs all in, and whether someone else on this list would serve you better.
